As time moved on and you moved away, every now and then you could still hear their tone and inflection and compassion and it would take you back "home." Though our method of delivery and sermon writing may differ, it's good to hear the voice of the one that taught me how to proclaim God's Word to His people. It's like coming "home." The mantra in today's churches seems to be, "If it will work in the board room, it'll work in the church." Yet, when I read the New Testament, one thing is crystal clear - The church of Jesus Christ is a COUNTER-cultural reality. I get uneasy when the best ideas we can come up with in the church always seem to come from whatever is trendy or fashionable in the world.R. However, could it be that the biblical perspective of leadership, a calling is a call for leadership in a space that is not what we call "the church" today. I wonder if Paul would ever have been approved by a search committee of any of the churches today. Maybe the call is to a particular task, function, or mission and not a call to a "position" within an institution. Maybe when we listen for the word of God today, we are listening to the wrong people. Maybe the ones called are not "in" the church.....hmmmmmm. Of course, it is no surprise that the Greek Orthodox Church prefers the Byzantine family of manuscripts; they produced them! For the science of textual criticism, see Bruce M. Having used the Greek New Testament by UBS, both the 3rd and 4th ediction (Critical text) for years, I always assumed that this critical text was supported by most Christians as the result of solid academic textual study. However, recently ran across the Greek Orthodox position that seems to support the Byzintine (sp) text type or the "received text" over the critical text that seems to rely more on the Alexandrian text type. Can you point me in the right direction? Is there recent published research in this area that is unbiased? As you said, we need to constantly be on watch to ensure that the Jesus we treasure in our hearts is the same Jesus who revealed Himself in Scripture. Any other Jesus is no Jesus at all, but rather an idol.

Wow, John, that's sad to hear about Ben Witherington. Even among what appears to be conservative scholars, there are such differences. The last I read of Witherington, he says that the historical Jesus was the One greater than Solomon and was a Jewish Sage that embodied God's Wisdom. Wow! Nothing like what I learned in church or seminary. Wright seems more like what I was taught but he seems to de-emphasize the apocalytic nature of Jesus' message. It seems that even if one accepts that the Gospels are historical, exactly what historical reality they portray is open to many interpretations.John Kinghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10064451981374409565noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1011314028160236945.post-49198298354475967512011-11-29T09:40:38.184-05:002011-11-29T09:40:38.184-05:00I actually focused my first Advent sermon on Herod...I actually focused my first Advent sermon on Herod to try and communicate what kind of "hope" the expectant Jews had. They lived in a world that was darkness, personified in Herod, and they lived every day "hoping" for deliverance. Then I transitioned them to Matthew's first audience, who still lived in that dark world, and "hoped" for the restoration of all things that would come with Jesus' return. I compared Herod with the Magi and the baby Jesus to show what kind of person rules our world, and the way the Kingdom of God is ruled. Certainly a fun sermon to preach, whether they liked it or not!Jason Blantonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16382455875093769476noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1011314028160236945.post-62927279575335362902011-11-02T18:36:12.101-04:002011-11-02T18:36:12.101-04:00Take it out of morality and move it to medicine an...Take it out of morality and move it to medicine and the destructiveness and myopia of this kind of reductionism becomes clear.

That's a fantastic analogy, Dr. Stacy.
